Umhlanga and KwaZulu Natal

Umhlanga and surrounds have a lot to offer for the whole family.  There are plenty entertainment for young and old.  Below we would like to mention but only a few of the attractions of this wonderful slice of the east coast of South Africa.

Midlands Meander
The enchantment of the Midlands has long inspired many a visitor and resident to creativity and as a result, local artists, potters and weavers combined to create an arts and crafts route in 1985, which was to become the highly successful and popular Midlands Meander.

Situated in KwaZulu Natal, the Midlands Meander is just north of Pietermaritzburg and extends from Rietvlei and Currys Post in the east, to Dargle Valley and Fort Nottingham in the west. This stunning stretch is about 80km’s long and brimming with amazing sights, sounds and activities.

Butterflies for Africa
Pietermaritzburg Butterflies for Africa has been developed to combine the best elements of top butterfly houses from around the world with some unique features of its own. The complex currently houses a walk-through Butterfly House (housing both exotic and indigenous butterflies), Butterfly Craft Shop, Art Gallery, Coffee Bar, African Art and Craft Centre, Butterfly Nursery and a Butterfly Garden planted with a large range of butterfly food-plants. Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve
The Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park is the only park under formal conservation in KwaZulu Natal where the Big Five occur. Established in 1895, this is the oldest game park in South Africa along with nearby St Lucia Reserve. Set in the heart of Zululand this is the oldest game reserve in Africa, where Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws. Today, Africa's 'Big Five' (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros) stalk the flourishing savannah. Game viewing is the principal attraction in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve. Viewing hides overlook pans and waterholes enabling one to observe the wildlife at close range.

The Karkloof Canopy Tour has been built in a spectacular valley of the Karkloof Forest Reserve. The tour includes long swooping slides over the treetops of the forest, stops below a 15m waterfall and takes in wide views across the Karkloof valley. This was the second canopy tour built in South Africa and has been designed for the more adventurous nature lover. Expect to hear the loud calls of the Samango monkey, see a rare orchid or catch the flash of an Emerald cuckoo as it flies past.

It is a powerful combination of sweeping aerials, slow pans, tight close-ups & superb imagery. Although this 26 minute long presentation is designed to entertain, it is also educational with information on the sensory biology of sharks and their role as top predators in the marine food chain. The audio-visual and shark dissection is presenter at the following times : Tuesday 9h00 & 14h00 Wednesday 9h00 & 14h00 Thursday 9h00 & 14h00 Sunday 14h00 No shows on recognised public holidays. Watch a shark dissection and see the internal anatomy of one of the ocean's most awesome predators. Visit the display hall and view the large variety of lifelike replicas of sharks, fish and rays, including that of a 892kg Great White Shark.

Boat Trips

Look out for dolphins and whales on these early morning boat trips on a Sharks Board skiboat and observe first hand how the meshing crews go about their servicing of the shark nets off Durban's Golden Mile.
